Often taking risks in newspaper formatting leads to more sales but why are so many papers reluctant to adopt new formats?  Most papers share the same format, with only their nameplates discernable: left-hand digest, above-the-fold promos, top story stripped, 4-column photo in the middle, etc but each paper serves a completely different market. Last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony revealed its newest creation, the Sony Reader, an "electronic book media device." Although aimed primarily at consumers of books, such a device has positive implications for newspapers.

Arguably the most perplexing case presently facing newspapers is the growing reluctance of readers to pay for their product. The push towards free originated with free papers and the Internet and could possibly be exacerbated by the ever-shrinking broadsheet. But if they heed present trends, newspapers may be able to save a pay model, even if it's not the pay model they're used to.

"Circulation Science," the second of six annual reports published by the WAN Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project, examines such issues as circulation trends, successful circulation strategies and ways to manage subscription sales and single copy sales. It includes techniques for determining the true value of readers, for investing in circulation and much more.

"Circulation is not simply concerned with delivering the maximum number of newspaper readers, though this in itself is a monumental challenge," said Jim Chisholm, Director of the Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project. "The role of the circulation manager lies in aligning a range of disciplines that together deliver the loyalty of readers, which in turn maximises advertising revenue and company profits. This is circulation science."

The SFN project, which WAN conducts with five strategic business partners, identifies, analyses and publicises all important breakthroughs and opportunities that can benefit newspapers all over the world.

London's Financial Times and Dow Jones' Wall Street Journal both seem to be sailing in choppy waters as falling advertising revenues and legal problems whip up a potentially lethal storm. FT's problems are two-fold, claiming a GBP 9m overall loss last year and currently being sued for libel, a case that could result in the sale of Fleet Street's legendary pinksheet. Dow Jones reported a 54% spike in first quarter profits, a drop that some speculate could cost its boss Peter Kann his job. Dow Jones' loss is being blamed on advertising drops of 8% at the Journal, a statistic expected to continue its decline. But despite this bad news for WST, its online version is raking in readers and profits. With an annual print subscription costing four times more than a subscription to its Website, (one of the rare newspaper Websites to charge for access), readers have been ditching dead-tree for digital. It's 731,000 online readers have helped rocket its Internet profit margins to more than twenty times the print version. Market analyst Seth Feinseth said "They're simply losing market share to other media. Print publishing is not a profitable business for Dow Jones anymore." Although the company's acquisition of the online financial site MarketWatch helped to boost its Internet publishing revenue by over 35%, investors are still not certain of the move's long-term implications.
