US: NY Times TimesSelect service gains 270 000 subscribers
Martin Nisenholtz, a senior vice president at The New York Times, announced that in the two months that its TimesSelect service has been available 270 000 members have signed up (see previous posting).
TimesSelect offers users access to the paper's archives, to editorials, and to opinion pieces, and it provides the opportunity for readers to interact with columnists. The cost of the service is $49.95 for a year and $7.95 a month.
The New York Times is very pleased with its readership's positive response to TimesSelect. Nisenholtz says: "The feedback from users has been very positive, particularly about interaction with columnists, usage of new tools and the archives."

Did the NYTimes break out the percetange of people paying for Times Select specifically vs. the percentage of people who are already NYTimes paper subscribers and thus don't have to pay? I would imagine that, since the cost of Times Select to paper subscribers is nil, that they could easily fill those 270,000 sign-ups with just current paper subscribers.

Here is the approximate breakdown (source : paidcontent.com) :
- 135 000 paying subscribers : around 20,000 at $ 39,95, 15,000 come from News Tracker, the rest at 49.95/year (80%) or $7.95 a month (20%)
- 135 000 are print suscribers that signed to get the service FOR FREE.
So revenue around : $ 5 millions/year. Profit ? TBD
