IHT to involve citizen journalists

Posted by Maddie Hanna on May 31, 2006 at 2:38 PM
Citizen journalism could achieve a new level of prominence with the International Herald Tribune’s decision to carry stories written by members of the public. The global newspaper run by the New York Times recently struck a deal with South Korean news Web site OhmyNews International, described as the news equivalent of Wikipedia.

The IHT plans to pull headlines from the site in what seems to be an effort to boost its coverage of Asia, the Guardian reported today.

Founded in 2000 as a response to South Korea’s state-run press, OhmyNews gave structure to the citizen journalism movement. About 75 percent of articles submitted to the site come from OhmyNews’ 40,000 non-professional contributors. Its 50 in-house editors and writers contribute the remaining quarter and decide which articles the site will use.
