AP content no longer hosted on Google News

AP.gifNew Associated Press content has not been hosted on Google News since the 24th of December, paidContent reported. This has been confirmed by Google in the following a statement:

"We have a licensing agreement with the Associated Press that permits us to host its content on Google properties such as Google News. Some of that content is still available today. At the moment we're not adding new hosted content from the AP."
Google News has hosted the Associated Press' content since August 2007. The deal between the two was vague and did not specify the way in which each article was permitted to be used, only that each article only had a shelf life of 30 days on the site. This, and the fact that the contract will expire at the end of this month, has led to the news agency seeking to redefine its contract with the aggregator.

It is uncertain exactly what this move by Google News implies, but according to paidContent's Joseph Tartakoff, the move could signal that "Google's negotiations with the Associated Press over a new licensing contract may have reached a standstill". Indeed, in October of last year, AP's chief, Tom Curley hinted that Google had not met his company's requests, stating: "We haven't talked with them in any serious way".

AP stories published on news sites which fall under the radar of the Google search index will still appear within the website's search results however.
