The service offers Latin American news sources via AP Mobile en Español, providing international, national and local news from participating news providers in Spanish to consumers in the U.S. and via the new AP Mobile Latina to users throughout Latin America.
The launch was announced on Thursday in connection with the general assembly of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
AP's senior vice president for global product development, Jane Seagrave, said in a statement:
"AP Mobile en Español and AP Mobile America Latina will be regional options in all current AP Mobile outlets including the WAP site as well as the iPhone, Palm Pre, Android and Nokia client applications," adding that the service will soon be available on more handsets and carriers.
AP senior vice president for Media Markets, America, Sue Cross, also commented that:
"We are excited to be joined in this effort by regional news providers. Together, we can empower Latin American news consumers to choose mobile news with robust location-based content in their native language, whether from Latin America, the Caribbean or U.S. locations."
It is reported that The RBS Group of Brazil is to be among the regional news providers for the AP Mobile America Latina, and product director for the group, Marco Rech, commented:
"It is a great pleasure that, besides being long-time AP subscribers, we now become content providers for The Associated Press."
Earlier this year, The AP developed French and English language versions of The Canadian Press Mobile, swiftly followed by the AP Mobile en Español with U.S. Spanish language news in two versions - as a dedicated news category channel for the AP Mobile iPhone application and as a standalone application available for download on BlackBerry App World.
