Trinity Mirror launches local business directory LocalMole.co.uk

Regional publisher Trinity Mirror has launched a local business directory, capitalising upon its local readership network. LocalMole.co.uk will be both a standalone site and be present upon the websites of Trinity Mirror's titles, such as the Liverpool Echo. According to Trinity Mirror, LocalMole.co.uk already lists some 1.8 million companies. MySpace has recently announced a similar plan.
The company is seeking to profit from its regional readership by offering a locally targeted package to advertisers, at a time when many regional UK newspapers are struggling. Chris Bunyan, the digital director of Trinity Mirror Regionals, said, "in the next year you will start to see a revolution in the [advertising packages] regional newspapers sell online". The move from Trinity Mirror is making the most of the ready-made local readership that the company commands - should more UK publishers be thinking along the same lines?
