Newsquest is jumping on the hyperlocal bandwagon, by launching hyperlocal websites for seven of its publications in the West Midlands. The first to launch were the Kidderminster Shuttle's 24 sites, and the publication will be followed by Stourbridge News, Halesowen News, Dudley News, Bromsgrove Advertiser, Redditch Advertiser and the Droitwich Advertiser.

The Shuttle is currently recruiting citizen journalists to contribute local news from their area, and a looking at the possibility to carry video and audio reports in the future after the Shuttle struck a deal with Midlands-based Chamber TV. Clive Joyce, digital editorial development manager for the seven Newsquest titles explained, "It is also an opportunity for smaller businesses based in our rural communities to promote themselves with targeted messages on our hyperlocal sections".

Roy Greenslade recently wrote about the need for hyperlocal news start-ups in the UK, during a difficult period for the local news industry - although also said that there is currently a lack of funding for such ventures. Newsquest have apparently identitfied the same niche in the market as Greenslade, and its new websites will be monitored with interest.
