Spanish news agency, EFE News Services, has come to an agreement with Washington-based union News Media Guild (NMG), which represents nineteen of its staff members working in the American capital, as well as in New York and Miami. The accord, among other things, includes a commitment to multimedia training.

By signing the pact, the nineteen journalists agree to a three-year salary freeze, as well as a hold on pension-related benefits in return for continued medical cover.

Sources said the union has been sympathetic to the current economic problems faced by the news industry, which made it willing to accept the terms on the understanding that journalists would also receive a thorough training in multimedia, as well as the guarantee that they would not lose their jobs or be forced to take a pay cut.

As part of the new terms, the agency will also be able to recruit young journalists on a contractual basis, as well as hire freelance staff in exceptional circumstances, previously not possible.
