Knight Foundation boosts hyperlocal journalism
Posted by Emma Heald on January 15, 2009 at 9:49 AM
The Knight Foundation has awarded 21 grants to "innovative ideas that will help residents lead informed lives," in a boost to hyperlocal news initiatives.
The grants, totalling $5million, were given to winners of the Knight Community Information Challenge. Projects to be funded include four new neighbourhood news bureaus in Grand Rapids, Michigan; an online news report for five close-knit towns in Connecticut who have lost their newspaper and local radio station; and a digital news network in San Diego involving VoiceOfSanDiego.org, uniting professional and citizen journalism to create a new collective civic voice.
Hyperlocal news initiatives in the US and beyond have great potential as they frequently provide information that cannot be found elsewhere. International and national news now appears from dozens of sources throughout the Internet and newspapers, and there is growing evidence to suggest that local news producers need to go more and more local to maintain their readership.
