UK: Looking at content management systems

Content management systems, which permit the smooth exchange of editorial between journalists and subeditors, are becoming a greater part of newsrooms as more staff are axed owing to the economic downturn. In fact, the Press Gazette reports that it's one of the few things that news organizations are "spending serious money on."
Trinity Mirror and Express Newspapers have invested in CMS technology, with Express even going so far as to justify the firing of production and editorial staff because of its Woodwing content editing system, which allows reporters to write directly on to the print and web pages.

No technology "yet known" can replace journalists, who add a human element to stories, Press Gazette argues.  However, fewer journalists are expected to produce "more and more words, pictures, audio and video content for print, web and mobile platforms."

CMS producers have tried to create a "one-size-fits-all" product, which "seamlessly integrates the reporters producing the content, the production journalists, and the website and print production software and hardware."

If everyone, print and online, works on the same system, Financial Times online editor James Montgomery said, "it's easier to work together."

However, editorial director of Reed Business Information, Karl Schneider, feels that there is no "one piece of software" to integrate all editorial production, especially one that would still meet an organization's needs in a year, given technological changes.

Some news organizations are weary of the "templates" provided by CMS developers, which could limit creative freedom.

Guardian News and Media has taken a different approach and developed its own CMS, which Press Gazette reports is not necessarily "prohibitively expensive."  GNM even suggested using free blogging software for smaller publications who might not need an expensive, comprehensive CMS.
