US: Spot.Us: Community-funded journalism
Posted by Rosemary D'Amour on November 21, 2008 at 9:20 AM
Media Bistro highlights a posting on popular website Twitter about Spot.Us, a new community-funded reporting website.
According to the posting, Spot.Us allows public, tax-deductible donations to commission journalism investigations for "important," and perhaps "overlooked" stories.
If a news organization buys "exclusive rights to the content," the post says, then "donations are reimbursed." If no one buys, then the content is released through a "Creative Commons license."
This approach could be a new outlet for journalists without a steady paycheck, or a new non-profit direction for news organizations.
