US: Election sets traffic record for Newseum website

The Newseum's website broke single-day and weeklong traffic records following the 2008 presidential election, stemming from the "heavy interest in Page One images on November 5" declaring victor Barack Obama.
Paul Sparrow, vice president for broadcasting and education, said that traffic has more than doubled, with 229,000 visitors on Nov. 5, setting a new daily record of nearly four times its usual traffic. The weeklong traffic nearly doubled to 919,300 visitors to the site.

Average time spent on the site has also increased, from eight and a half minutes to eleven and a half minutes per visit, Sparrow said.
The Newseum's monthly average will go up, Sparrow said, as many visitors to the site were new, and will probably return.
The site posted images of 700 dailies "for the first time," and has been getting a response from more international papers that want to be involved.
Sparrow said that the increased interest has prompted the news museum to "add some features to the site" that will let users choose the most popular front page each day
