Guardian.co.uk has experimented with a new homepage design to "complement its liveblogged coverage of election day."

Thumbnail image for gfpage.jpg The 2008 presidential election has been a "great opportunity for news sites to experiment with coverage and layout, developing features for future use," BBC News online editor Steve Herrmann said.

The template used by Guardian.co.uk could be used for "other major news events," marking a trend in journalism to draw in audiences with newer, flashier, easier layouts.
