A World Internet Project-International Report 2009, released by the Macau Internet Project, reveals that even though people may have increasing trust in online sources, a "surprisingly high" amount of users find that only half or less of the information found on the Web is reliable. Meanwhile, almost half of users from around the globe believe that offline newspapers are dependable sources, Macau Daily Times reports.
According to the Macau Daily Times, 72% of Macau users and 70% of
Singapore users consider offline papers to be trustworthy. However,
places where newspapers were seen as less important sources include
Canada (26%), Israel (25%), Australia (23%), New Zealand (20%) and the
United States (20%).
Countries where respondents consider most or all of the information found online to be reliable feature the Czech Republic (54%), New Zealand (49%), Colombia (48%) and the United States (48%).
On the other hand, countries where a larger proportion of users thought "half, a small portion or none" of the information on the internet isn't reliable include Macau (73%), urban China (70%), Sweden (64%), Canada (62%), Australia (60%), Israel (58%), Colombia (52%), the United States (52%), and New Zealand (51%).
Although users may be skeptical of the Web, more than two thirds of users in all surveyed countries (except for Sweden) think that online sources are important.
