Al-Jazeera will launch a Public Liberties and Human Rights Desk headed by ex-Guantanamo inmate, Sami al-Haj, to "promote respect for human rights and public liberties by monitoring, documenting, broadcasting and raising awareness for these key issues."
The project will work with the news division of Al Jazeera and will focus on establishing a specialized database on issues of human rights and public liberties, according to AFP.
Al-Haj was arrested in 2001 on the Pakistan-Afghan border and help with out charge until May 2008 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. "My years at Guantanamo made me appreciate in a very profound manner how basic human rights could be violated and the fundamental importance of public liberties. These experiences are etched deeply into my soul," al-Haj stated.
