Daily newspaper The Independent reports that it has joined a world-wide initiative called US Elections 2008, which entails a LiveJournal community of non-US papers wishing to collect public opinions of US citizens about their country's presidential election.
The aim is to facilitate open discussion of significant political issues as well as portray natonal and international reactions to topics addressed by the candidates, reports independent.co.uk. Other titles taking part in the initiative include Russia's Gazeta.ru and India's Mint.

"This is an unprecedented use of the web to go beyond traditional media
and hear directly from real citizens rather than pollsters and
pundits," said Jimmy Leach, digital editorial director for The Independent.
Reporters post questions or articles that are to be reviewed by the community. Users then are invited to reply to the questions and their thoughts may be translated into the language of an outlet in order to demostrate the views of US citizens.
"To be able to let our users express their opinions to some of the world's most prestigious media companies is truly an exciting opportunity. It also means that citizens from around the world can debate an election which affects us all," said Matthew Berardo, LiveJournal's Vice President and General Manager.
The LiveJournal community was officially launched on September 26. The Independent intends to blog live during the October 7 debate and to feature questions linked to the event.
