US: The Slate Group launched, plans to develop web-only magazines

The Washington Post Co. announced yesterday the launch of The Slate Group, a new online publishing entity to be led by current Slate magazine editor Jacob Weisberg.

The group, which will include the Slate, Slate V, The Root, and the Big Money, a business site debuting later this year, will develop and manage a family of web-only magazines, including additional spin-offs from the Slate, as well as new ventures and acquisitions.

"The Slate Group is an Internet start-up within the framework of an existing media company," said Weisberg. "The writers and editors here have over 250 years of combined experience producing Internet-only media. In expanding into new areas, we intend to draw on everything that we've learned collectively about what works on the Web."

The Slate Group takes the next step in online journalism, moving away from content designed for print and reformatted for an internet audience, to content created solely for the web.
