livesearch.pngIn a step to improve its Internet search service, this week Microsoft launched a redesigned Live Search, their news search service bringing together stories, photos and video from around the world.

According to a senior product manager Justin Osmer,  searches will initially be limited to "reputable news sources," which includes newspapers, magazines, broadcast and cable shows, and websites, but may eventually include blogs. Live Search will have improved searches for popular topics and content areas, such as shopping and entertainment.

"News is another one of those areas where there's a lot of searches," said Osmer. "And we've had a news category or a news vertical for a while, but to be honest, hadn't put a lot of effort to it."

Based on a user's IP address, the service will also feature a strip of results of local news from the local papers and television stations and a traffic-tracking feature for Live Maps.

Microsoft aims to release major updates to Live Search twice a year, in spring and fall.
