sunderland.pngThe Sunderland Echo website reached record web traffic in January, being read by 216,000 people, more than double last year's figures for the same month.

The Echo attributes its success to making the website accessible to as many users as possible. Their regular updates have slideshows of photos that didn't make it in print, and they have video and podcasts of experts' views. Their sports section, which draws the most viewers, have exclusive player interviews and video highlights.

In the future, they plan on expanding forums for debate and community sections.

Digital editor Lee Hall said, "This year's big target is to improve interactivity. We're looking to introduce more ways to get involved with the website by giving users the chance to submit their own content.
