UK: NAPA rejects idea of automated tracking system for online copy

The National Association of Press Agencies (NAPA) has rejected the idea of an automated payment system to track written material from news agencies online.

The thought of such a system was considered for quite a while but the process of tracking agency material online was deemed too big a task to be fully automated.

“It’s a question of trailing the material: how do you get machines to register the element of a story that is from an agency and needs payment?” says Chris Johnson, vice chairman of NAPA.

At this point, technology for tracking news agency pictures on the Web is more advanced than for text.

According to Johnson, publishers recognize that agency material posted in their online editions should be paid for, but few have enforced a system to guarantee the payment. There is another misconception on the publishers’ side that one payment would cover all platforms for publication, both online and in print – which isn’t the case.

Why in the age of web2.0 should one think of generating revenue through content?
We all know that newspapers or any online news media depend on advertisements for sustanance, the idea should be to make your paper or website acceptable to the community for them to belong (hence genetrate revenue through ads).
The way forward is to allow people to make use of your content with refrence to the originator, this driving the community towards you, keep spreading and not blocking.
The sooner people realize this the better for them.
