Is mobile Web the future of news?

According to blogger and ‘journalism iconoclast’ Pat Thornton, “mobile is the future of the Web and news.”

The amount of people accessing the Internet through mobile tools is constantly increasing, especially since the launch of smartphones and iPhones.

Google says it gets 50 times more search requests from iPhones than from any other mobile handset. Vic Gundotra, head of Google’s mobile operations, told the Financial Times mobile Internet searches may overtake fixed internet searches within the next few years,“ commented Thornton.

Many other manufacturers are looking to duplicate Apple’s touch screen and features, including Samsung, with phones equipped with TouchWiz UI technology. The interface looks similar to the iPhone.

Last year, Mozilla (the open-source Web browser) announced that a mobile version of Firefox is in development.

The iPhone currently connects to the EDGE network, which “is alright,” said Thornton, to surf Web pages, reading news, checking e-mail and more. However, “it’s not very good for consuming rich multimedia content. 3G isn’t as fast as the broadband that many people enjoy at home, but it still has a good deal of bandwidth.”

Ten years ago it was time to get the web, now it’s time to get the mobile Web. According to Thornton, “we have to go where consumers are going. They are going mobile.”
