YouTube extends mobile delivery to millions of phones

YouTube.com has expanded its service to distribute video content on millions of mobile phones that have high-speed Internet capability.

YouTube videos will now be available on 100 million phone devices worldwide. Currently it is only available on Apple’s iPhone, devices sold by Helio (a small US wireless provider), and a scaled-down version is available for Verizon subscribers in the US.

YouTube is also experimenting with technology to enable users to easily upload mobile video content on the site.

"It's basically the full YouTube experience you can get on the desktop -- on the phone," said Dwipal Desia, YouTube's mobile product manager.

"Right now we are focused on building a user base on alternative screens and we'll look at monetization in the future," he said.
