US: NYT City Room blog evolves into print

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on January 9, 2008 at 5:25 PM
The New York Times’ local news blog City Room, launched last June, will soon make its way into the print edition. The online-to-print move is also a good example of print-online cross-promotion.

Until now, posts from City Room have regularly been repackaged as Metro stories into the paper, but in the future, blog articles could appear in the print edition clearly branded under a “City Room” banner.

“There are a lot of people who read the print section who just aren’t aware of how much is available on the Web,” said Patrick LaForge, editor of the blog. “A lot of that stuff doesn’t get in the paper. So how can we tell readers, ‘Hey, you might want to go check some of this out’?”

There are no definite plans yet as to how the City Room section will look in the paper, but its inclusion will probably resemble that of The Caucus and Bits, respectively The Times’ political and technology blog, which appear in the paper as discrete columns.
