German journalist and competitive yachtsman, Joerdis Guzman is filing daily multimedia reports for a Berlin newspaper from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Using nothing more than a laptop, a point and shoot camera and a balky Iridium satellite phone, Guzman files daily multimedia reports from the scene of the world’s largest transocean race.
Guzman-Bulla is the art director for Welt am Sonntag, which was recently crowned "Europe's Best Designed Newspaper", and is not only sailing as a crew member from Las Palmas to St. Lucia in a boat with nine other sailors - but is also filing daily podcasts, blog entries and photo slideshows for Welt online during the 2,600 mile ARC rally.
The daily Web reports generate reader comments and create anticipation for the next day's adventures. This is a great example of multimedia Web story because the journalist is taking the audience along on the ride using basic Web tools. No Flash or special programming expertise is used - yet the reports are media rich and create a synergy online that engages. All of these story components add up to a satisfying live story experience - both for the journalists and the audience.
The daily slide shows take you into the personalities and routines on board the Albatros and the podcast interviews and blog entries take you into the struggles and joys of what is is like to be a working sailor in this massive race.
Joerdis explains how challenging the reporting environment sometimes is and how resourceful a mobile journalist needs to be - it sometimes takes three people to send an e-mail, "Every ten minutes the satellite drops below the horizon and the connection disappears or threatens to break down. How much crew does it take to send an E-mail? Three: One down at the computer, one on deck with the telephone and one, which presses the thumbs. After two hours it is achieved with photos and text in Berlin," she says.
Now that you know how it is done, marvel at all of Joerdis’ podcasts, daily posts and photos.
