Video survey results: 4 hours needed to produce 1 minute of video

In Andy Dickinson’s second survey regarding video workload in newsrooms he has expanded on his first survey. He gave updated results on production times by splitting it into three categories (pre-production, production, and post-production) in order to give a true sense of how long it should take to produce video (4 hours should be allowed to produce one minute of video).

The following are some of his new findings from the survey:

Video is commonly shot and edited by the same person
Reporters are expected to shoot video and file copy on the same story
Photographers are expected to shoot stills and video on the same story
You should allow 4 hours to produce 1 minute of video
There are no clearly defined roles in newsrooms for video

Dickinson found that 71% of newsrooms require reporters to both shoot video and file a print copy on the same story.

Dickinson recognizes the need for a more specific study to look into the workflows in newsrooms and plans to put out more of his research on the subject.
