UK: Johnston press to roll out mobile news service
Posted by Evan Fell on November 28, 2007 at 4:08 PM
Johnston Press plans to launch a news subscription service next year via mobile phones across its 120 titles.
The service will use telecommunications provider g8wave and will be gradually introduced, first in the smaller regional titles and than across the larger publications.
The service will feature local headlines and subscribers will be able to choose between general news alert services or updates according to interests.
Currently, through local marketing initiatives, Johnston Press is building a database of potential users.
Chris Pennock, the publisher’s group newspaper sales and marketing director said, “In the past few months we have seen month-on-month growth of up to 40 per cent at some titles, but they are still very small numbers. What it shows, though, is that there is a market and an interest in this type of technology."
