Reuters reports on mobile journalism developments

Reuters' reporters have been experimenting for a few months now with mobile journalism toolkit, using a Nokia N95. They have mostly used it for TV reporters to shoot video for the Web, but now a text reporter will use a handset and a Bluetooth keyboard to file to the wire from L.A. and Las Vegas.
Nokia has been working with Reuters to develop a better mobile device for reporting. The result of this was a Flashlite mobile client that connects to an installation of the WordPress software that powers Reuters weblogs. Mobile journalists are able to send video to the system that will be checked by editors before going live.
Chief scientist of the project Nic Fulton sees a bright future for mobile journalists. He said “We believe that mobile tech is evolving extremely fast to the extent that we can see a time - probably not that many years out - less than five, maybe as short as three - when mobile phones could have HD capacity, extremely capable keyboards.”
Reuters does not, however, expect all of its news to become mobile. The various reporters, bloggers, and cameramen at the organization agree that it provides a complementary aspect to reporting. Matt Cowan, European Media and Tech correspondent at Reuters said, “I don’t think this is going to change things overnight and this is the way we’ll all be reporting - but it will be an incredibly important tool that plays in to how we report stories. It injects a kind of dynamism that we’ve seen this year mostly from social networks.”
