Netherlands: Volkskrant using Flash for Harry Potter story

As the Dutch translation of the latest Harry Potter book was released on Saturday, the Volkskrant carried an exclusive interview with author J.K. Rowling. But what made the online article special was its interactive flash-animated content and use of multimedia storytelling.

In the animation, readers can access the interview, watch the movie review, as well as read an interview with the Dutch Potter books Illustrator.

It’s been some time now that Volkskrant graphic editors (not web editors) make the animations for the website. This seems to make sense since “they know everything about graphics, maps and where to get the right visual information. They can create one graphic and port it to different media,” wrote Wilbert Baan, interaction designer for de Volkskrant, on his blog.

Says Baan: “these are the kind of projects that connect all parts in a news organization to create multiple productions about a similar subject in different media.”
