US: Huff Post hires CBS manager, edges toward newspaper

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on October 2, 2007 at 4:27 PM
The Huffington Post has just appointed a new chief executive, Betsy Morgan, who will leave her job as general manager of CBSNEws.com to head the new media venture. Yet another sign that new media are attracting talent from established media companies.

Although CBSNews.com still has more traffic than the Post’s 3.5 million monthly unique visitors, “I see a bigger opportunity in a different brand from a mainstream brand, a brand that is following a different future path than a mainstream news site is going to pursue,” said Morgan.

New media sites “are moving to the mainstream just as traditional news companies are making a determined effort to become more “new media”,” reported the Financial Times.

In a recent article about the site’s success, founder Arianna Huffington stated her desire to turn the Huffington Post into a full-fledged online newspaper.

It seems like she’s succeeding.

The Financial Times article below delves into a more detailed explanation about how the lines between the Post - new media - and traditional media are gradually blending.
