US: Gannett launches mobile news websites

Gannett Co. Has launched free local news-oriented mobile news sites to complement its newspaper websites. The service spans across some 84 daily newspapers and 19 broadcast station websites, including USA Today.

The mobile news websites provide local information and also link to national news provided by the USA Today mobile site.

Users can access the sites by simply adding an ‘m’ before the newspaper’s regular URL (ie: http://m.tennessean.com or http://m.usatoday.com/) or by texting a unique daily short code to 59523.

"Local news and information is more in demand than ever by consumers across the country. Making it easily available by mobile device takes Gannett's local information expertise and puts it in consumers' hands," said Jack Williams, president of Gannett Digital.

"Advertisers who appreciate the value of trusted brands, local content and audiences will be able to reach out to those consumers throughout the day."

Have you ever considered an on-line forum where a reader seeking to know how newspapers from different areas of the world were covering the "big" stories of the day could go? Ideally the reader could find a general headline defining the subject, and be able to click on any number of news organization logos below to read that paper's story.

Two quick notes.
1) A mobile version of the USA Today has been since at least October 2006.

We first posted a note about Wap.USAToday on October 10, 2006.

Btw, when I tried:
http://m.usatoday.com I noticed it's the same site, (content, layout) that's available at the htt://wap.USAToday. com site

Also, worth mentioning that Gannett has provided major funding for mobile web service and as also used 4INFO's services. At the end of June, 4INFO completed $10 million dollar round of series D financing led by Gannett.
