Newspapers working on newscasts

Posted by Ben Thalman on June 11, 2007 at 11:48 AM

“It’ll take a long time to beat stations at their game, but at least they’re experimenting,” said Gordon Borrell, CEO of media- research firm Borrell Associates, of some newspaper’s plunge into broadband newscasts online.

Newspaper companies such as The Roanoke Times, Naples (Fla.) Daily News, and Gannett’s Wilmington, Delaware-based Journal News have all begun newscasts on their websites.  Many of these newscasts target a younger audience, which is being missed by newspapers and traditional broadcast news.

The goal of these newspapers is to maintain their lead over TV stations in online local ad revenue. Their lead, compared to TV stations, according to a study by Borrell Associates, is 36% to 7.7% of all locally spent, online advertising.

Andrea Lynn, multimedia director at Naples Daily News identifies their web newscasts as “a platform between the Web and the newspaper, somewhere between breaking news and the more analytical approach.” Whereas Journal News is imitating traditional broadcast programs more.

Many of the newspaper companies are seeing positive results and are being applauded for their attempts to diversify and experiment.

I wish Editor-in-Chief Momani of the Jordanian newspaper Al-Shihan, the very best. The decision to reprint these cartoons & to ask Muslims internationally to be reasonable, is a gutsy one.
Often, extremely disagreeable depictions of westerners or the west, are portrayed in Muslim media & spread throughout the Muslim world, with little or no adverse reaction from the west.
The events of the past few weeks are demonstrating to the peoples of the world that much of Islam may be simply, out of control. Its no way to make friends. It will be used against Muslims in general.
All the reactions do is give credibility to those who espouse that Islamic nations & their leaders, cannot be trusted. It also portrays Islam as a religion many will want nothing to do with & will fight against.
If there is no reaction to the Jordanian publication, then people in the west will only see a double-standard & find that as objectionable as the violent reactions against Demark & the Danish publisher.

LISTEN..... STOP WAR, please listen (and I mean LISTEN!!!) to your heart, to be reasonable is not hard at all. PEACE.

Dear readers of the newspaper,

I am an elderly woman living in Denmark, which was until recently a very peaceful place.

At the moment I am deeply shocked because of all the hatred against my small country.

I think it is extremely unfair to make all Danes responsible for some stupid and idiotic cartoons in a newspaper.

Danes have never blamed all Muslims for the terror on nine eleven - of course not, because the terror-act was only committed by a limited number of Muslims. And it is exactly the same in this matter. The cartoons were made by less than 0.0003 % of the Danish population, so it is unfair to blame a whole population for the stupid and offensive provocation of a newspaper.

Danes are not mean, but quite and peace-loving people, which can be verified by many Muslims living in Denmark.
As some of my students (all Muslims) say:"We all come from Adam. Actually Muslims and Christians are brothers and sisters, so why don't we talk peacefully with each other!"

In the hope of a better and more peaceful world
yours sincerely

The rioting, killing, and destruction seen as a result of the publishing of a few cartoons gives point to the extreme nature of the reactions of some members of the Muslim faith. This reaction is, in its own way, a new form of terrorism...don't do anything that we find offensive, or we will destroy you and/or your property.

As an avid reader of Naples Daily News and user of their XML / RSS streams and listener to their podcasts, I look forward to their online videos as well.

Naples Daily News has one of the best online newspaper websites and they're constantly changing. They took the daring plunge to include easy-to-add comments to each article, which has spawned discussions, brought people with similar likes/dislikes together. Something so nice and simple can make such a tremendous difference!
