US: NY Times to add more opinion content on the web
“We’d just like to have more and more and more,” he said. Rosenthal, who took over the position only three months ago, has pushed for expansion of Times Select content, which now includes blogs by college students and brand-name guest columnists, and even The Opinionator, a blog about opinion. “We’ve got composers, astronomers—the guy from Queen,” he said (band member Brian May recently blogged for the Times).
Rosenthal has commissioned his deputy editor to bring in contributors to TimesSelect, while a current TimesSelect staff member will move to match this job in print.
About 218,000 people have signed up for TimesSelect online so far, though this includes those with “.edu” email addresses who can join for free. Another 414,000 get it free with subscriptions.
Rosenthal envisions new intermedia connection, with “stuff that starts online and continues in the paper, or stuff that starts in the paper and goes online.”
Stanley Fish a Florida International University law and humanities professor, is an early incarnation of this vision; he has written print columns that are free online, print columns that reside behind the TimesSelect wall online, and web-only TimesSelect pieces.
He says the biggest difference between writing for print and writing for TimesSelect is the absence of a length restriction online. In print, columns are restricted to 730 words. Online, Fish has written a 2,200-word piece.
Two-thirds of senior news executives who answered the World Editors Forum (WEF) Newsroom Barometer believe that over the next 10 years, opinion, analysis, and commentary will increase in importance. Further, 40% see the Internet as becoming the most important source of news for their audience during the same time frame.
