Newspapers and blogs: a losing combination?

Posted by Lindsay Berrigan on April 10, 2007 at 10:51 AM
Mark Evans of b5media offered his ideas on why newspapers journalists’ blogging won’t work due to a general lack of passion on the writers’ end.

The fundamental problem, says Evans, is that most newspaper journalists who blog are forced to do so in newspapers’ attempts at media convergence. “As a result,” he says, “these blogs lack passion and enthusiasm - two critical elements for successful blogs. Many newspaper bloggers are just going through the motions.”

As newsrooms get smaller, newspapers are asking reporters to produce more and more content, including web stories, podcasts, and videos. However, many reporters are receiving little to no extra compensation for their multimedia duties, rendering blogs unimpassioned “extra writing.”

Evans points to the Guardian and Telegraph in the UK as well as the Washington Post and San Jose Mercury in the US as papers whose writers blog well.

Newer reporters may bring more multimedia zeal to newsrooms, but for now, says Evans, most newspaper blogs remain mediocre at best.

Unless one has name and fame in the society, newspapers won't publish news even if it is of public importance. I am saddened by the fact that there is no affinity and close relationship between genuine blog creators and the newspapers. In India or for that matter newspapers are controlled by business magnets and barons. The common man has no accessibility to the feudalistic newspapers. Will you please help me in highlighting the above blog as a news feature in leading and mass circulated dailies and electronic media?
