US: User reaction to new USAtoday.com
Still, the site has received over 400 comments, most from longtime readers who think the redesign is too confusing, busy, or slow. However, many have posted more than one comment, and the number of complaints cannot compare to the number of new users who have registered.
USA Today Senior Vice President Jeff Webber said that “everyone is thrilled” with the changes and that they are “not an experiment”.
In 2006, Netscape changed its format, becoming a user-submitted news platform and causing much user uproar. USAtoday.com, however, has not eliminated its own content, hoping to add a social dimension to its own news coverage.
“The social media part is only one part,” said Webber. “The other part is letting the outside in. Not becoming less journalistic, just expanding their role to be more of a guide - we point to the best on the web in addition to reporting the best that we have.”
