US: NY Times to focus on digital?

A week after the Los Angeles Times’ announced it was becoming fully platform-agnostic, executive editor of The New York Times (NYT) Bill Keller suggested to MarketWatch’s Jon Friedman something along those lines.
TimesSelect, NYT’s online paying portal, counts 609,000 exclusive online subscriptions, and generates about $10 million in yearly revenues.
The NYT’s first online video player appeared in November 2005. Less than two years later, there’s a staff of eight video journalists.
The Times’ online scored a great hit recently by erring online the video obit of comic Art Buchwald. The video was such a success that it may have prompted a new practice, and certainly is a good attraction for online visitors.
In March, NYT.com will post user-generated videos, which are obviously cost-effective, good for reader interaction, and useful in “building an electronic community of customers,” wrote Friedman.
The Times’ website already includes many ‘new media’ features, such as blogs, podcasts and video.
Keller said nothing explicit about the Times becoming platform-agnostic, but the Times is nonetheless pushing in that direction. Like most newspaper editors and managers today, digital operations and online editions are a top priority.
“Anyone who still believes that the Internet is more of a nuisance than a godsend can sign up for instant membership in the Flat Earth Society,” wrote Friedman.
