China: Search engine to become news portal
Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on January 24, 2007 at 10:54 AM
Chinese Internet search leader Baidu has just won the approval to become an online news portal, giving it both huge market potential and competitiveness against Google.
Now Baidu, armed with an Internet news content service license, can do its own reporting rather than link to existing news sources.
"This is definitely competition for Google," said Doug Crets, a Hong Kong-based researcher at Media Partners Asia.
"A news licence is a rare resource to Internet companies in China. So far only very few Web sites are allowed to report news legally in the country," said a government source.
News and search are the two most popular Internet hobbies for over 120 million Chinese, according to government research.
Google has drawn criticism for allowing the Chinese government to block search terms from Google’s Chinese version, as for all other search engines.
Baidu, with its brand-new news license, could maybe create new boundaries.
