Submit online to MySpace, be published in print
Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on December 19, 2006 at 11:30 AM
Just when it seemed most print is moving to online, MySpace announced it was moving into print publishing through a deal with UK style magazine Marmalade.
Marmalade’s March issue will be exclusively composed of user-generated content from Myspace.
MySpace hopes to find, through this initiative, the young and talented artists, creators, and stylists among its 70 million regular users.
"MySpace is the ultimate democratic medium where anyone with talent can showcase their work," said Jamie Kantrowitz, senior vice-president of marketing and content at MySpace Europe.
Likewise, Marmalade editors will consult the MySpace website in search of savvy contributors. "We are consistently bombarded with reels, portfolios, fanzines, demos and brilliant ideas from Marmalade readers so throwing it open to the whole of MySpace is a complete no-brainer," said Kirsty Robinson, co-editor of Marmalade.
Both Google, MySpace’s owner, and Yahoo, have made efforts in the last months to offer other platforms for their advertisers, including newspapers and magazines. The Marmalade venture is a whole new step towards print for MySpace though, and could lead to a future revolution in multimedia convergence.
MySpace users have until Jan. 26th to submit their material.
