Japan: digital media and publishing don’t merge, they separate

Whereas many newspaper staffs and web staffs are merging to constitute a more ‘efficient’ system, Japanese Nihon Keizai Simbun Inc. decided on Monday to separate its digital media and publishing operations.
The Electronic Media Bureau will become Nikkei Digital Media Inc. and manage digital assets such as Nikkei Net or Nikkei Telecom 21.
The Publications Bureau will be renamed Nikkei Publishing Inc. and focus on business publications, although it hopes to publish a wide range of titles. Tadashi Saito, corporate auditor for publisher Bungeishunju Ltd., will be given a seat as chairman.
Both bureaus will dispose of a range of initiative and entrepreneurship, and plan on launching new businesses and publications. They still remain entirely owned by Nihon Inc.
If the Nikkei project brings forth results, this could serve as an example of online specialization and publishing diversification. An alternative to what many U.S. or European newspapers are doing, getting their journalists to post on the web and vice-versa.
