UK: Times to open up selected archives

Posted by John Burke on October 6, 2006 at 9:54 AM
The TimesOnline is to unlock some of its digital archive, announced the paper's digital publisher Zach Leonard at the Association of Online Publishers conference. By doing so, the News International daily hopes to open up a new stream of revenue.

At first, the archives will be aimed mostly at professionals instead of consumers. Mr. Leonard explained that Times' articles in certain areas such as legal matters are extensive and could be sold for a premium price for businesses seeking such information.

As for the consumer market, Leonard figured that features such as book reviews written by well-known literary figures would be of interest and could generate some revenue.

Many newspapers around the world charge for their digital archives and others are experimenting with different models in the same hopes of new revenues.
