Multimedia call for local print journalists

Posted by John Burke on July 11, 2006 at 8:50 AM
On his blog Média Café, newspaper designer and consultant Jeff Mignon asks if traditional print journalists from local papers are ready for a new news age: "Are they ready to pick up the video camera and microphone... Are they ready to ask how should I tell this story... sound, video, text, images, infographics?" He feels that this is imperative to the success of local papers, seeing as most of the news they publish on the web can easily be found elsewhere.

He begins his article by noting how the time spent on the websites of most major news organizations is paltry: only 13 minutes per month with CNN leading the group at 40 minutes a month. He says that this is a reason why content from newspapers cannot simply be copied onto the Web because readers will not hang around long enough to read it.

But, he continues, "The daily print paper is there to satisfy the audience used to the paper. The online version is there to attract new consumers. Not one nor the other will be mass market."

This is where the power of local comes in. Community papers are well poised to be the mass market for their immediate audience by making themselves indispensable to it by not only covering their communities but organizing it, posting calendars of events and bringing local businesses to the site to advertise.

If they can do this successfully, they are certain to keep their readers on their site for more than 13 minutes a month.

Sorry, but this has left me deeply confused. How can sales of 2.4 million make it the "largest selling English paper in the world"? What about The Sun and The Daily Mail in the UK? The Sun's moving the best part of 4 million copies daily, while the Mail is near enough 3 million. And the News of the World selling near enough 5m copies on a Sunday. Do you see my problem with that story?

The Times of India is the largest English language broadsheet paper. :-)

The Times of India has become the largest English morning broadsheet in the world, not the largest English newspaper per se.

WOMAN TORTURED BY IN LAWS FOR 25 YEARS

A shocking case of utmost cruelty and fraud committed on a woman continuously for the past 25 years has come to light in Channapatna town of Bangalore Rural District, Karnataka, India.
In 1982 the woman Srimati Anju Gupta belonging to north India was married to RAJESH GUPTA a resident of Channapatna who was a compulsive gambler and habitual drinker for a dowry of 200 Tolas gold and 50000/- cash, Needless to say that the fact of the boy being a compulsive gambler and habitual drinker was not disclosed to the brides family. On her very fist honeymoon night the lady came to know of the habits of her husband. The young lady took it in her stride as her fate and worshipped her husband like panchparmeshwara and her in laws with full devotion. The fact of her husbands’ vices was not disclosed by this great lady to her parents or brothers, look at the sheer sacrifice of this lady, all the time trying to turn her husband into a productive person.
SCENE 1:Imagine the suffering and torture of a woman under a severe asthmatic attack being told by the in-laws that she is acting for the sake of avoiding work and being forced to prepare spicy and oily foods for a joint family of 18 persons and clean the utensils her children looking on helplessly her husband away on a binge of gambling and drinking. Don’t you think that perpetrators of such heinous crime should be put behind bars? (The neighbors can corroborate all the facts without being named). This is just sample story of torture and harassment. Imagine the other scenes one more horrifying than the other.
List of other instances at the end.

Now for the full story:
In 1983 after giving birth to her child Aditya Gupta (now turned into a mature person of 24 today has brought the story to the limelight) she was coaxed to go back to her mothers place and settle down there on the pretext that the husband may turn for the better and they promised to send her a monthly allowance regularly which they never did. The lady and her husband started working on menial salaries and the ladies parents chipped in with substantial contributions so that the couple could live comfortable. On repeated requests for remittances from her in laws the in laws told that the share of her husband was being deposited into a bank to meet the future needs of the ladies family. In the meanwhile her brothers got married and contributions from that side started dwindling. The lady had given birth to a girl child all the expenses being borne by her parents. Now her brothers started withdrawing from her and made her feel unwelcome. In a fit of desperation she repeatedly called up her in laws who invited her to come back to Channapatna as they told her that they would give her due share of properties and income. Now her in laws had already started acquiring assets from 1982 in the name of the elder brothers and taking the excuse that otherwise your husband may squander it away and always promising her that she would get 1/3rd share in the properties as they belonged to a joint family and all the needs of the family were being met by her father in law whose business started flourishing The creation of this wealth was based on the dowry brought by her and the income of her father in law who also promised separately that they will provide the due share of the properties handsomely on the son becoming major. Otherwise the in-laws who masqueraded as big business men were living in rented houses and doing small business. At the time of her mother in laws death she again demanded the share in her mother in laws estate the request was again turned down citing the same excuse.

Her father in law who has now crossed 80 and losing his senility, having age related hearing impairments and on the last legs of the journey of life has triggered the sale of gupta assets one by one and the proceeds being pocketed by them and not a single penny being provided to the lady and her children Imagine the magnitude of fraud being perpetrated on this lady The elder brothers families are in the meantime leading lavish life styles their siblings being married in 5 star hotels, traveling by air throwing lavish parties to which the lady and her children were never privy. By the sheer manipulations of her in-laws she was completely ostracized from the social circle so that she could not put up her plight to anyone. Imagine the sorrows and miseries of this family who suffered silently praying to God for her children’s happiness. It has now come to her knowledge that the very ramshackle and unfinished house that has-been provided to her by her ungrateful in laws is in the process of being offered for sale to some influential and antisocial elements so that they will get it vacated on the basis of their clout and terror. Her dreams now lay shattered in the debris of ill health, debt without any future for her children.
Her only ray of hopes her husband who is undergoing rehabilitation under the guidance of ISKCON. The Founder Acharaya of ISKCON His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada appeared in the dreams of her husband and asked him to reveal the truth. To follow the Divine Guru’s order the husband is hanging his shame and guilt in the open and her son Aditya who has dared to bring this story to light so that this lady can get justice.

WILL SHE GET JUSTICE OR NOT IS THE BIGGEST QUESTION?

HELP NEEDED FROM PEOPLE, LAWYERS, JUDGES AND ORGANISATIONS, PRESS ETC TO GET JUSTICE FOR THIS COURAGEOUS LADY. THE FACTS OF THIS STORY CAN BE CORRBRATED BY NEIGHBORS AND OTHER PERSONS OF GOOD REPUTE BY A FACT FINDING MISSION.

ROYAL INDIAN NAVY MUTINY AND THE GOVERNMENT IGNORANCE TO THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS

THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IS COMPLETELY IGNORING THE ROYAL INDIAN NAVY (RIN) MUTINEERS AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO ARE FACING HARDSHIP FOR THEIR LIVILIHOOD. THEIR REQUEST TO GRAND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS PENSION TO ALL THOSE RIN PERSONNEL WHO WERE DISCHARGED FROM THE SERVICE BEFORE AUGUST 15, 1947 UNDER ANY PRETEXT SHOULD BE TREATED AS PARTICIPANTS IN 1946 RIN MUTINY AND EXTENDED THE BENEFIT GIVEN TO FREEDOM FIGHTERS.

THE ROYAL INDIAN NAVAL MUTINEE OF 1946 WAS ALSO AN IMPORTANT EVENT IN THE INDIAN HISTORY OF FREEDOM MOVEMENT. IT HAD ACCELERATED THE MOVEMENT AND GIVEN A FIRM WARNING TO THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT THAY THEY WOULD HAVE TO PAY HEAVY PRICE FOR REFUSING FREEDOM TO INDIA.

IT WAS A GREAT MASS MOVEMENT IN WHICH THOUSANDS OF SAILORS IN VARIOUS SHIPS, DOCKS AND SHORE ESTABLISHMENT SPREAD ALL OVER THE WORLD HAD TAKEN PART. THE FACT THAT ABOUT 5000 SAILORS THEN POSTED IN BOMBAY LED A PROCESSION THROUGH THE STREETS OF BOMBAY WAS AN EVENT WHICH HAD NO PARALLEIS IN THE HISTORY OF FREEDOM MOVEMENT. THE MUTINEE WAS CALLED OFF BY THE INTERVENSION OF LEADERS LIKE SARDAR VALLABHAI PATEL, JAWAHARLAL NEHRU, MRS. ARUNA ASIF ALI AND OTHERS.

THOUGH RNI MUTINY STANDS RECOGNISED FOR THE SANCTION OF FREEOM FIGHTERS “SAMMAN PENSION”, A MAJOR PORTION OF THE PARTICIPANTS ARE DENIED THE BENEFITS ON TECHNICAL GROUNDS. THE MAIN REASON FOR THE OBJECTION IS THE ABSENCE OF DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE TO PROVE THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THE MUTINY. THE GOVERNMENT IS PRESENTLY DEPENDING ON A LIST OF FEW PEOPLE SELECTED FROM THE DOCUMENT LEFT BY THE BRIITISH TO IDENTIFY THE PARTCIPANTS OF THE MUTINY.

THE MUTINY WAS NOT THE HANDWORK OF FEW HUNDRED SAILORS, BUT A MASS MOVEMENT INVOLVING THOUSAND OF SAILORS ALL OVER THE WORLD.

IN THE SAME TIME CENTRAL GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY PLEASED TO SANCTION THE PENSIONARY BENEFITS AFTER PRELONGED LEGAL FIGHT THROUGH THE COURT TO ALL MSP (MALABAR SPECIAL POLICE) PERSONNEL WHO PARTICATED AND LOST THEIR JOB FOR FREEDOM STRUGGLE WHICH ALSO TAKNE PLACE IN THE SAME COURSE. BESIDES THAT IT HAS ALSO COME TO THE NOTICE THAT CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IS ALSO PAYING THIS BENEFITS TO SOME OF THEIR DISMISSED SAILORS TAKING PART IN THE ROYAL INDIAN NAVAL MUTINY, BELONGING TO OTHER STATES.

THE RECENT HIGH COURT ORDER WAS TO CONSIDER RIN MUTINY ALSO A PART OF FREEDOM FIGHT TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION LEGAL DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED BY THESE PEOPLE AND THEIR WIDOWS, BUT THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT EYE IS REMAIN CLOSED AND THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANY THING AS THEY DID NOT GET ANY SAVINGS OR GOOD NAME IN DOING SO. NO POLITICIAN OR POLITICAL PARTY ARE INTERTESTED IN THIS AS MUTINEERS ARE NOT IN THEIR VOTE BANK. NOW WE HAVE LOTS OF LEADERS WHO ARE OUR LEGISLATORS/PARLIMENTARIANS, BUT VERY SORRY TO SAY THAT MOST OF THEM ARE STANDING FOR THEIR BELLY SERVICE, COMULATING ILLEAGEL WEALTH TO THEIR NAME AND THEIR RELATIVES HAVE NO TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE POOR SUFFERING PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOB, HEALTH AND WEALTH FOR FREEDOM YEARS AGO ARE IN VERY CRITICAL STAGE OF THEIR LIFE/SOME OF THEM LEFT US LONG TIME AGO. IF YOU DID NOT THINK ABOUT THE SUFFERING PEOPLE, CONSIDERING THE REQUEST FOR FREEDOM FIGHTER’S PENSION THEN INDIAN HISTORY WILL BE IN DARK OF IGNORANCE TO THESE PEOPLE.

I HOPE YOU WILL TAKE THIS MATTER TO THE CONCERNED AUTHORITIES AND DO THE NEEDFUL.

THANKS AND REGARDS,
