IHT: text for your ears
The International Herald Tribune has launched a service called AudioNews with Swedish company Read Speaker in which a computer translates text into sound for easy podcast downloading. Articles can be downloaded by section or individually. The service is currently free of charge but the NYTCo. paper is looking for sponsors.
Said editor and publisher of IHT.com Meredith Artley, "It allows us to sell advertising on a scalable basis. No advertisers are on board yet, but we've got a couple of folks who are interested," she said. "We would probably put on five to 10 seconds of an audio ad, and we're considering doing it on every third or fifth article."
Articles are read by a female British voice, but early tests have shown that the computer's pronunciation is not always perfect.
Offering such podcasts, however, will no doubt be an increasingly popular feature when trying to attract young readers.
