US: WaPo pushes for multimedia reporting
The Post hopes to equip all of its foreign bureaus with digital cameras, foreign editor Keith Richburg told the Washingtonian. Currently, a quarter of those bureaus have cameras. About 50 Post reporters carry cameras, according to James Brady, executive editor of Washingtonpost.com. To Brady, the cameras serve as a “triple-threat device” and deliver “a whole different dimension than you can get on the print side.”
Although Brady maintains no reporter will be forced to wield the camera, the implications are that writing well doesn’t necessarily cut it anymore. Newspapers are being slammed for failing to keep up with technological change. The same criticism can be leveled against reporters who refuse to adapt.
