US paper to release podcast for Filipinos

Posted by Maddie Hanna on May 30, 2006 at 10:16 AM

Ethnic newspapers are a growing trend, with established papers trying to expand into the niche markets of their communities. But ethnic podcasts? That’s the approach the San Francisco Chronicle is taking with Pinoy Pod, a new weekly podcast of interviews, news features and other information for the Filipino community.

The Chronicle hopes the 10-20 minute podcasts — to be downloaded from the Internet and listened to on a computer or digital music player — will attract not just Filipinos from the San Francisco area, but members of the worldwide Filipino community.

It’s too soon to say whether or not the high-tech feature will prove successful, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction — and a step above the San Jose Mercury News, which dropped its free offshoots for the Vietnamese and Hispanic communities due to budgetary concerns last October.
