UK: Will Daily Mirror editor be forced to resign?

Posted by Bertrand Pecquerie on May 6, 2004 at 1:23 PM

nmed06The debate is still raging as to whether Piers Morgan should resign from the Daily Mirror. According to Ciar Byrne and Colin Brown at The Independent "senior sources on the Daily Mirror privately acknowledged yesterday that the newspaper had serious problems with its publication of photographs purporting to show British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners. But they said the newspaper's editor, Piers Morgan, was preparing to "front it out" in the hope that the news agenda would move on and he could save his job." Tom Leonard at The Telegraph writes that Morgan said yesterday that he "would have to consider his position very seriously" if it emerged that the paper had been "completely hoaxed".

According to the Guardian, military investigators are finding it "impossible" to establish if the photographs published in the Daily Mirror purporting to show British soldiers torturing an Iraqi prisoner are authentic, defence sources said. Experts have told Royal Military Police officers there is not enough detail in the 20 pictures the Mirror has handed over to reach firm conclusions. Officers will redouble their efforts to trace the two soldiers who the Mirror claims are its sources but if the pair cannot be found - and the tabloid is insisting that it will not reveal their identities - the investigation may flounder.

Well Piers Morgan,
I hope for the rest of your life you will try and make amends for the serious harm that you have done to mankind by your greed and massive ego for allowing those pictures to be printed, not even knowing if they were the truth. You have no where to hide you are no better then a traitor. Just take a long hard look at the pictures of the young man that has been executed i for one will never forgive you or your lousey paper

I entirely second the previous posters comments; this matter has got me more worked up than I have been for a long-time, and it is absolutely correct that the likely-phoney-photos have already resulted in escalated problems on both sides, and clearly may have been a contributing factor to the recent execution of Nick Berg, although it is probably fair to say that the publication of the genuine photos of US abuse represented a more potent provocation.

Mr. Morgan is a man who has taken the gutter press to new lows, yet seems so proud and pleased with his achievements. How a UK national newspaper can publish information without even a semblance of due-diligence is very worrying, and it is no great surprise that the British media is now held in such low regard by the rest of the world's press.

How many chances will this editor get? All I can hope is that the British public will vote with their wallets and cease buying this rag, and TrinityMirror will have to get rid of him. I find it hard to believe he would have the decency to resign of his own accord and foresake the luxury lifestyle his champagne-socialist attitudes have thus-far afforded him.
