Los Angeles Times claims 5 Pulitzer Prizes

Posted by Bertrand Pecquerie on April 6, 2004 at 1:41 PM

Reported by David Carr, New York Times: "The Los Angeles Times won five Pulitzer Prizes on Monday, dominating this year's competition with writing that included criticism, editorials and breaking-news coverage of the wildfires that devastated Southern California last fall. The five prizes were the second-highest number of awards won by a single newspaper since the awards were first given in 1917...

"The New York Times won the public service award Monday for articles written by David Barstow and Lowell Bergman, detailing deaths and injuries among U.S. workers and showing how employers broke basic safety rules with impunity. According to CyberJournalist.net's research, the NY Times got the Pulitzer, but it should be noted that this was part of a massive convergence effort with the CBC and PBS Frontline. For that reason, it is the first time a major convergence project has won a Pulitzer Prize!

The Wall Street Journal won two prizes: one for explanatory reporting, for a series examining aneurysms, by Kevin Helliker and Thomas M. Burton; and another for beat reporting, for Daniel Golden's look into admission preferences given to the children of alumni and donors at U.S. colleges.

The Washington Post won in the international reporting category for Anthony Shadid's dispatches from Iraq, and the prize for investigative journalism went to the Blade of Toledo, Ohio, for its series on atrocities committed by Tiger Force, an elite volunteer Army unit, during the Vietnam War.

Leonard Pitts Jr. of the Miami Herald won for commentary for what the board called his ``fresh, vibrant columns.''
