Those are the words of Li Changqing, recipient of the 2008 Golden Pen of Freedom. At the opening ceremony of the 61st World Newspaper Congress and 15th World Editors Forum the Golden Pen of Freedom Award was given to Mr Li, Deputy News Director, Fuzhou Daily, China. Unfortunately he wasn't able to tell the audience himself. Instead his words were recited by a close friend and colleague Miss Li Jianhong who was in Gothenburg receiving the Golden Pen in his honour. Mr Li Changqing hasn't been given his passport back since being released from prison in February this year after having spent two years in  jail. Neither was Mr. Li Changqing able to travel to Gothenburg. She was stopped at the Beijing airport when trying to board the plane. Mr Li Changqing had written a letter to the audience.
The letter told the story of how he became a journalist, why he still continues to work as one, what his driving force is and was. From questioning and doubt concerning the system in China at a young age, after the death of his father, till youth rebellion at the university, followed by the intellectuals revolt in the 1980's.
The problems he discovered, the weakness in the system, and the lack of freedom for the Chinese people is what spurred him on. And this is still why he keeps writing and publishing articles about interesting issues in the country. This was what got him arrested in 2006. He had revealed and exposed the spread of the dangerous, infectious disease, dengue fever, in southern China, before the authorities had informed the public. An act that would have been greeted as the action of a hero in most other countries was deemed as the "fabrication and spreading of false information."  The outbreak of dengue fever was never recognised by the authorities. This shows the vulnerability of a society without free press. The letter ended with Mr Li Changqing putting hope in the future and blessing China.

Content on the Internet used by the wrong people is a big problem, according to Mark Bide, project director for ACAP, Automated Content Access Protocol. He started the conversation at the Digital Media Round Table, part of the 61st World Newspaper Congress, by asking the audience, "how many had heard of ACAP before you came here this morning?" Quite a lot had. But what is ACAP?

"ACAP is a protocol communicating the rules of usage, not a tool to enforce them." By using ACAP you can specify a "usage purpose" for which specified crawlers are permitted or prohibited to use content. Then you can restrict permissions in different ways, including time limits and limits on snippets length.

Companies have always had their "term of conditions", but as a user you don't have to read those. But today the terms are non-readable for the machines. "Machines can talk to each other, but they dont know what to say,'' Mark Bide explains. "ACAP is designed to be an machine-interpretable language because humans can't be involved in every part if the communication." The terms are built up as a standard framework for machines readable expressions and permissions.
 
Mark Bide thinks this is an idea that arrived at the right moment, but why should you implement ACAP in your business? Mark Bide's answer is "why not?"

"It's a way of demonstrating that you support the idea of the right to your own content." ACAP means greater confidence in allowing your content to be made available in network, and greater confidence that your policies will be understood by your business partners.

Mark Bide also made it clear that ACAP's purpose is not to define new business models, but to enable them.

Tony Lee, sales director of Norway's FAST, a company helping media companies transform their business online, presented FAST's product and strategies for newspapers at the annual Digital Media Round Table, part of the 61st World Newspaper Congress.

"You have to start with with your users," Tony Lee told the audience. He mentioned questions worth asking yourself: what task do I serve? Who are the key users? How do I build uniqueness? What is enabling content and services?

"Where, when and what are the users looking for?" Tony Lee asked. If you can make your content more findable, your users will be more contented." The right content end services improve your relationship with the user, said Lee. The search for audio, picture etc. must be more exact and relevant. Tony Lee shows us a site where the content is transforming depending on what the user is searching for. "It's really about exposing content and showing the user where to find the information." The content on New York Times site is created by the search company, and Lee thinks the Times' homepage has a very rich search and is dynamically built.

Lee isn't very impressed with Google's seach-page. "You don't want a list of results, that's not very user-friendly." Instead, ask the following questions: Can I find it? Can I find it near me? Can I compare it? Can I find a deal in it? Can I read what others think about it?

Johan Brandt - Director of Mobile, Dagens Nyheter, Sweden

Last year Dagens Nyheter, DN, launched a mobile designed for the DN-company. The mobile site is getting more and more complete, but Johan Brandt wants it to become it's own, not a replica to the web site. "We should not take the web and squeeze it into the mobile. That's very important I think." It's also important to get to the mobile-site by just one click. "Many people weren't aware that they could reach news my the mobile internet." But Johan Brandt don't think people know what they are paying for - what is a megabyte? "It's very important with flat free mobile browsing. The costs have to be predictable when searching for news by the mobile."

To show the users the way to DN's site, bookmarks were factory-installed in the Nokia´s N82. And to make the mobile site useful to the users DN made their popular guide to Stockholm in a mobile style with user-generated content (give your own view of the restaurant etc.).
 
Johan Brandt says the mobile is a social media - contacts, pictures, friends, chat and so on. The media company involves things as ratings to let the user give instant feedback, and give place for the users to share their opinions in the form of comments. "If we don't do this the users will go somewhere else. People want to be involved!"

You, as a media company, must find a way to get paid - but still get "free" content to users. DN uses banners, premium services, revenue sharing and sponsorships, but as a user you don't pay anything exept to the telecom company.

Johan Brandt also wants a standardisation of the techniques used in mobile telephones.

A man from Finland asked about the deal with Nokia. Johan Brantd couldn't talk about the details, but is happy with the deal.
