Australian publisher Fairfax, spending $155 million, has bought the Albury-Wodonga daily newspaper, The Border Mail. The paper will also give Fairfax a 51% stake in a state-of-the-art printing press that specializes in short-run newspaper publications.
The independent newspaper group, Your Leek Paper Ltd., has been acquired by Iliffe News and Media for an undisclosed sum. Your Leek Paper Ltd. was funded by employees' redundancy cheques and created after seven staffers quit the Leek Post & Times, after it was sold to regional newspaper giant Northcliffe, to create their own newspaper
Although recently put into effect, several major newspapers, including The San Francisco Chronicle, The Houston Chronicle, The San Antonio Express-News and the Austin American-Statesman, have already begun syndicating and displaying high-quality blog content on their web sites.
A new free daily, the San Francisco Daily News has been launched with an initial circulation of 5,000 copies. The paper, a project born from James Pavelich, owner of the Denver Daily News, Dave Price and Amando Emendoza, focuses on community news. Pavelich and Price previously owned the Palo Alto Daily News, the Burlingame Daily News, the Los Gatos Daily News, the Redwood City Daily News and the San Mateo Daily News. With a lot of experience in Bay Area news, this new daily may prove successful, although it will have to compete with other free dailies in the city like Metro.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, took action. In the first changes of this kind over his 7 year term, he has “pardoned” journalists sentenced to prison for defamation and insulting officials.
As more people carry portable devices with cameras, the amount of citizen photojournalism is skyrocketing. Often caught in the middle of an event, ordinary citizens can snap a shot of what they see first hand, and now they are being recognized for their work.
The Wall Street Journal is considering putting an advertisement on its front page, starting next year. With a 30-member design committee, the Journal is working on its second overhaul in five years, calling it “Project Renaissance.

A recent international poll reveals that people around the world trust the media more than they trust their governments. The poll, conducted by the organization Globescan with the BBC, Reuters and US think tank The Media Center, spanned 10 countries and some 10,230 people asking them opinions on the media on issues of trust.
The Malaysian government will help partially fund a proposed Muslim media center aimed at countering attacks on Islam and negative images of the religion. Hosting an international center for Muslim journalists, the center would provide a meeting point for Muslim journalists to discuss common issues and provide an antidote to growing Islamophobia.
