Finland: Taloussanomat to end print, the rise of the online-only news’paper’

Last week, Finnish business daily Taloussanomat announced that it would no longer publish in print by the end of the year. In this interview with the Weblog, Mikael Pentikainen, chief executive for parent newspaper group Sanoma, affirmed that the group’s major print newspapers are here to stay, and that Taloussanomat’s fate may be linked to its specific market, but was aware of the growing possibility that print newspapers turn to online-only.

Rue89.com was founded in May by four former journalists and bloggers from the French leftist daily Libération. Within months, the online-only news site unearthed a few scoops and became a recognized independent source in the French media landscape, ranking first among French news sites for time spent, ahead of newspapers, according to Nielsen NetRatings. One of its founders and director, Pierre Haski, tells the Editors Weblog how Rue89 found a working compromise to pro-am journalism.

        The print press has given lots of attention to Minnesota Star Tribune’s former editor (1983-92) and publisher (1992-98), Joel Kramer, since he announced the launch this fall of an online-only, non-profit news publication, MinnPost.com. Both print and online news organizations will be watching its first steps to answer their own existential concerns. How can editors adapt their ‘print journalism’ to make it work online? Is it streetwise to focus on quality coverage and less so on multimedia? Can the online-only, non-profit business model be sustainable?
