"Britain's culture minister gave a glimmer of hope to the country's recovering media sector today, saying he was willing to radically rethink and redesign the system of regulation. Jeremy Hunt told the Oxford Media Convention in a speech that he would conduct a thorough review before producing a Green Paper by the end of the year that will set the scope for a new Communications Act due in 2015", Reuters via Media Network reported. The article noted that Hunt has already signaled that he would be willing to reduce the laws surrounding cross-media ownership at a local level and also the rules imposed on ITV, the country's biggest commercial free-to-air broadcaster, and how it charges for advertising.

MocoNews announced that Facebook has today debuted Facebook for Feature Phones, a new app usable on some 2500 different phone models like Nokia, Sony, Ericsson, LG and others. Developed by Snaptu, which creates apps for Java-based devices, Facebook's new app lets feature phone owners access Facebook just like their smartphone friends do: users can synchronize their contacts, view photo and friend updates, and navigate everything through a home screen. The app is an enhancement on Facebook's existing product for lower-end phones, Facebook Zero. As the article says, in markets where Zero is offered, customers do not have to pay any data charges to use the basic service, only paying when they start to view photos or visit sites outside of Facebook; the new feature phone app will follow that model with participating operators--for the first 90 days, at least. Thereafter, data charges will apply.

Kim Wilson discussed what lessons media outlets should learn about social media in light of the recent star sign controversy. The message, on the Journalistics blog, is that some news spreads very fast.

Meanwhile, the BBC College of Journalism blog discusses the necessity of finding the audience on Facebook, rather than waiting for it to come to you.
