La Repubblica has announced two new ways to receive the whole newspaper digitally. The first is online: for €14.98 per month it is possible to access a digital edition of the paper, the archive and ten local editions.
The paper has also released a new iPhone app which allows those who download it to buy an entire copy of the paper for €0.76 and read individual articles.
As publishers seek ways to make money online, many seem convinced that readers might well pay for a digital edition of a paper even though much or all of the same content is available on the paper's website. La Repubblica already offers a subscription-based iPhone app at €4.99 a month.
According to the latest figures from Italian circulation auditor Audipress, La Repubblica is the most read news daily, with an average of 3,209,000 per day (sports paper La Gazzetta dello Sport is the most popular paper overall.) In the last year, La Repubblica has been engaged in both journalistic and legal conflict with Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, which could explain its increase in readership compared with previous years.
